Useful Links Scotsmist have put together for you
All the links I have compiled are based around computing. I regularly
check the links, but if you should have any trouble with them or any you
know are not operating anymore, please e-mail me.
In the left margin you will find
links to the pages described below.
Newsletter Subscriptions
For the best newsletters around. Here are links to pages or sites that
offer free e-mail newsletters that we here at Scotsmist, highly recommend
you subscribe to. We are in no way liable for any of the newsletters you
may subscribe to. We have or do enjoy a subscription to the listed newsletters
and have no complaints. Therefore the primary reason for listing each
one, is based on personal experience.
Online PC Magazines
I read a lot of computer magazines but still prefer to access each publishers
web site for all the latest information, gossip and news. On the page
are separate lists of both American and British (UK) magazines. My main
preference is towards UK editorials, so if you know of any good magazines
online that have not been included please send me an e-mail. Likewise
as with all my pages, if there are any dead links, let me know.
Search Engines
Over the years, I have spent a lot of time online and quite a lot of the
time was spent working through search engine results, trying to find what
I was looking for. I kept a list of the best ones and so started off this
page. Over time I have added more, better engines and also added some
useful communities to search. The communities categorise each site by
hand unlike search engines which generally work with formatted text near
the start of each document submitted or send spiders to crawl around sites
looking for links and information to catalogue.
Manufacturer Sites
I haven't listed every single manufacturer in the world, just the big
players in the game. You know, the ones that have been around for a while.
The list is specific to sites that offer software and hardware support
to their customers.
BIOS and Motherboard Sites
The links on this page are made up from both motherboard manufacturers
that offer support and WWW sites that provide some form of technical information
regarding the BIOS or CMOS. Recently I have added sites with a similar
content to Scotsmist with regards to understanding how the BIOS works
or how best to configure the low level set-up.
Component Sites
All the bits that go inside the computer, including the case itself are
listed by manufacturer or web site on this useful page of links I have
built. From sound cards and graphics cards to hard drive or CD-ROM manufacturers.
I know that it keeps getting mentioned, but if you should find any dead
links on any of my pages, let me know.
Peripheral Sites
Outside the computer are devices such as printers, scanners, monitors,
speakers, the keyboard a mouse and so on, obviously different on your
computer than on any of mine. I collected these links during upgrading
or repairing other users computers. Most of the main stream manufacturers
are included. If you are a manufacturer or a web site and think that you
should be included on the peripheral sites page, please send me an e-mail
and I will be in touch.
Technical Sites
After I started adding other technical sites with a similar content to
my own, the page got bigger and bigger. So I started up a page just for
all the other sites on the web that offer technical support, advice, guides
or some form of help.
The Bosses Bookmarks
Just in case I missed out anything useful that my be hidden away in my
bookmarks, here is the whole lot, well almost. Apart from password protected
sites that I use, This page pretty much is it. There shouldn't be any
duplicated entries from any other links on this page. However I update
the bookmarks page regularly as I myself add and remove links from my
browser favourites, so occasionally dead links or duplicates slip in.
If your in to technical know how, check out some of the links I use.
Scottish Sites
Last but not least my home Country gets a mention. All the links on this
page are of a Scottish theme and among them I have included search engines
which specifically cater for Scotland and sites from or about Scotland.
I still haven't found a good Rab C Nesbitt page to add to my list but
there are plenty of sites about the Scottish country side, our communities,
towns, cities and history. Did you know that Scotland as a nation has
never been conquered, not even by the Romans.
Games Sites
Due to polular domand both on my community foum and pressure from my brother
I decided it was high time to make some time to bring together a list
of games sites that get both his and my approval. As he once said, I got
all the technical DNA, whilst he got all the fun ones, so must of the
work is his. If you think , like me networking, trouble shooting, building
or upgrading computers, installing or configuring software and techie
stuff is fun, then you would agree I got my share of fun DNA too.
