Newbie Guides A Trouble Free PC Using Virus Protection

Using Virus Protection

Virus protection software works at many levels. It can scan every disk you put into your floppy drive and check every program for a hidden virus before you run the program. It can even scan all the files on your hard disk for viruses. Recently, anti virus software can work with e-mail messages and attachments and file transfers across local networks.
Unless you're a high-risk user, someone who downloads lots of files from the Internet or who swaps floppy disks a lot, you can get by with scanning for viruses whenever you think there may be a problem or suspect a file that you have on a disk. High-risk users should configure their virus utility to run when they start up their computer.

One word of warning. In the past, anti-virus software has prevented proper updating of system files during normal use. The anti-virus software saw the editing as a potential virus threat. Therefore, the important changes to the system file were not carried out. The machine still rebooted after completing the installation and the once working machine lay trashed.

There is also an anti virus setting in the CMOS setup. We do not recommend using it. The setting has been known to cause problems with Windows and should be reserved to users of the MS-DOS operating system.
