This glossary is always being updated. Glossary - XX.25 - A standard protocol for packet-switched data networks, published by the International Telecommunications Union, Telecommunications Sector (ITU-TS).The standard specifies the interfaces between data terminal equipment and the packet-switched network, and how data is assembled into packets. An alternative protocol for packet-switched networks is the newer frame relay standard. Xenix - A version of the UNIX operating system developed by Microsoft for use on PCs. Xerox - A leader in the global document market, providing document solutions that enhance business productivity. The company's document processing activities encompass developing, manufacturing, marketing, servicing and financing a complete range of document processing products and solutions designed to make organisations around the world more productive. In the 1970s Xerox developed devices such as the mouse and graphical user interface technology that was later adopted by Apple for use in early home computers. XGA - Extended Graphics Array. A super VGA card from IBM which can provide up to 1024 x 768 pixels and 65,536 colours in its images (resolutions available depend on the combination of XGA card and monitor). XModem - A file transfer protocol, predecessor to Ymodem and Zmodem. XOR - Exclusive OR. An exclusive OR is true if one of the inputs is true, but not both."A XOR B" means "A or B, but not both.". XPress - A popular page layout program offered by the Quark Corporation. It is the tool of choice for many design professionals, despite its goofy name. X-Windows - A graphical user interface that can be run on UNIX systems. It roughly mimics the operating environment that one finds in a Macintosh or Windows OS. Thanks to the mouse oriented interface of X-Windows, a whole lot of UNIX guys can do that spooky mile-a-minute typing thing with only one hand. |
